Many home improvement agencies offer advice and assistance with finding the money to pay for home adaptations, finding a reliable builder and supervising the building work. Some run a ‘handyperson’ service which carry out minor adaptations jobs e.g. installing grabrails. To find out if there is a home improvement agency in your area you can search www.findmyhia.org.uk/ Grants to help with home adaptations If you need an adaptation to your home because you are disabled, and need help to pay for this because you are living on a low income, you may be entitled to a Disabled Facilities Grant. Every local housing authority is obliged to offer disabled facilities grants. Usually the first people to contact are social services as an occupational therapist will usually visit you at home to discuss what you need and then make a recommendation about the necessary adaptations. However, this does vary according to where you live. A detailed explanation about Disabled Facilities Grants is available on the Gov.UK website: www.gov.uk/disabled-facilities-grants Other sources of information and advice about home adaptations Age UK www.ageuk.org.uk Tel: 0800 169 6565 Age UK national can tell you if there is a local Age UK in your area.
