Poor housing conditions can cause or exacerbate risks from a wide range of common chronic health conditions, including respiratory illnesses, heart disease, stroke risk, depression. Housing conditions also impact on risk of injury and accidents, particularly falls amongst older people. Care & Repair England promoted action to integrate housing help into health services, including highlighting the impacts and value of pioneering, integrated housing & health services. Prevention is better than cure Enabling older people to age safely and well at home needs to be the guiding principle for decisions about Housing, Planning, Health and Social Care. Anticipatory Care – the key role of housing interventions Housing interventions (e.g. adaptations, repairs, energy efficiency improvements etc.) prior to a health crisis can make a significant impact on the NHS aim of preventing escalation of health problems, particularly for those with long term health conditions, frailty etc. Here is a Summary of Evidence concerning impacts of housing services (across-tenure) which improve health, reduce health risks and contribute to wider health prevention Care & Repair England promoted action to integrate housing help into health services, including highlighting the impacts and value of pioneering, integrated housing & health services.
